Lake Balaton, Plucked from the Skies

Lake Balaton: Plucked from the Skies

Guest speaker: Dr. Ákos Horváth, meteorologist

The birth, evolution, and the highs and lows of Lake Balaton’s life are deeply intertwined with atmospheric processes. Thousands of years ago, the carving out of the lake bed was linked to winds sweeping down from the Bakony Mountains, and even today, every drop of Balaton’s water is provided by increasingly hectic weather patterns. Due to climate change, water replenishment is facing serious challenges.

The presentation focuses on the atmospheric cycle of the water entering Lake Balaton and provides an overview of the related extreme weather events.
